I live in Brisbane in Queensland, Australia where I work for Arup as a maritime structural design engineer. Arup is involved with all kinds of large scale projects worldwide. I work primarily with maritime structures and coastal engineering.
I have lived in Brisbane since October 2005. The job tasks vary a lot and I have been involved in many different designs and projects.
The first project I worked on (at previous employer) was the design of two steel pontoons for the Port of Brisbane and when they were built it was a great feeling of fulfillment inspecting the final result and to walk out onto this floating structure. Read more about my career here.
There have been many challenges by making the decision to move to Australia. There are many things you take for granted and you don’t realize their importance until they are not there. In Denmark I have all my family and old friends and that is why I want to go home as often as I can and try to stay in touch with as many as possible.
The climate in Brisbane is simply fantastic! In the summer it is around 35°C to 30°C during the day and around 25°C to 20°C during the night. In the winter it is around 20°C to 15°C during the day and around 10°C to 5°C during the night, when it is at the coldest. Therefore, the outdoor activities are all year round. I enjoy going to the beach, surfing, visiting new places, bbq’ing and relaxing by the pool in my complex.
Being able to integrate in a new culture and to start a new life in a new country is something that really takes an effort. But if you are ready for it and have an open mind it all feels as an exciting new start. Now it has become an everyday life to live here and I have gotten more or less used to all the things that are different here to the way of life in Denmark. As Danish we know how certain rules, systems and things work and when coming to another country to find that some things are done completely different and much more complicated can be confusing and annoying! Off course, there are things in Australia that we in Denmark could learn from too!
As a person I feel that my experiences around the world have given me perspective and confidence. Especially being an intern in San Francisco, traveling through USA with Klaus, traveling through Asia on my own and now in Australia is something I feel very lucky to have been able to do – and I would recommend it to anyone! Seeing the world outside Denmark makes it clear that being from a country like Denmark creates so many more opportunities that many others will never have.
I am a pacific and calm person by nature and I usually always look at the positive perspective in every situation. I try to treat people fair and with respect and get disappointed when I am not treated this way (although this does not happen often).
The people around me have created who I am - all the way from my upbringing to now. I have met and got to know a lot of great people along the way and if you are reading this you know I am thinking about you.
